CDM simulation to meet the needs of SOC and advanced process node ASIC designs.
With larger die and package sizes, advanced process nodes and more automated handling of finished chips during assembly and test, CDM looms larger as a source of chip and board failure. While HBM protections are still essential, helping to reduce overall failure rates, we have been hearing from our customers that CDM failures are a top concern. Predicting and accurately simulating CDM failures is not as straightforward as performing pad to pad based HBM simulations.
CDM discharges occur after charge builds up on the package and creates capacitively charged metal structures on the die. Once a ground path is created it can be difficult to predict where the current will flow. Current can flow through almost any path in the chip, and consequently reach and potentially damage many devices.
Magwel has developed a unique new tool that builds on our HBM expertise and solves the difficult CDM simulation challenge.
One key advantage of Magwel’s CDM solution is that Magwel CDMi uses dynamic simulation with its FastCDM™ engine. Magwel’s solver based metal characterization engine rapidly sets up and solves all current flows during each pad test. The result is better insight into voltages across protected devices and the currents they are exposed to in the event they trigger.
Magwel’s CDMi features outstanding usability and accuracy. Its ability to model and simulate multiple discharge paths leads to fewer false positives – saving engineers valuable time debugging results. Set up is easy and can be done very quickly. Lastly, viewing errors is made efficient with the fully interactive violation and error reporting view, including links to the layout for violation locations and field views of current density, voltage and more.
Magwel’s new CDMi is built on the established ESDi tool foundation to help improve chip quality and reduce expensive yield loss and field failures.

Metal-in Shielding Bags for Faraday Protection
ACL Staticide has launched a new product category – ESD Packaging – featuring metal-in shielding bags. The new line builds upon ACL’s broad range of static control products for Electrostatic Protected Areas (EPAs), electronics manufacturing and assembly, aerospace, automotive, transportation and packaging environments.
Dan Kaiser, ACL’s national sales manager said, “We are excited to offer our customers another product line which is sure to grow in the future. The new shielding bags come in two styles with multiple sizes and act as a protective shield for the sensitive item contained within the bag.”
Each bag is layered with static dissipative polyethylene, aluminum and static dissipative polyester for heavy-duty protection from damaging electrostatic discharge. Bags are available in both open-top for quick loading and emptying or with resealable zipper.
ACL Staticide’s metal-in shielding bags are RoHS compliant and date-coded for traceability. Open-top bags range in size from 3” x 6” to 18” x 24” while resealable bags are available in 3” x 5” for the smallest items to 10” x 12” for larger devices. Both metal-in styles are sold 100 bags per pack, five packs per case.

Magwel® offers breakthroughs in ESD analysis with its revolutionary ESDi® product.
For HBM, ESDi thoroughly simulates all pin combinations in a design for comprehensive ESD event protection. Chips with large numbers of pins are analyzed extremely quickly using parallel processing and optimizations that preserve accuracy and boost speed.
ESDi automatically identifies and extracts the ESD network, including all supply nets. Unlike rule based tools, ESDi uses extraction and simulation engines specifically designed for ESD verification to analyze the circuit layout and protection devices. It also does a better job than conventional circuit simulators because they do not handle snap-back modeling well.
ESDi simulates multiple ESD device triggers per event which provides accurate current values on all discharge paths using precise extracted parasitics for the full ESD protection network. EM-violations, high R and IR-drops, device voltage- and current-stress, oxide-breakdown, junction damage, parasitic substrate currents, etc are checked and reported through the user interface or graphically.
The ESDi GUI offers an integrated layout editing tool to help users test and experiment with layout changes to address ESD and current density errors. ESDi makes it easy to change layout and quickly rerun all ESDi analysis and simulation to rapidly find effective fixes for ESD issues. The layout editor tool can be used to change or add metal lines, add or remove vias, and make other layout changes. This time saving ability eliminates tedious iterations that would otherwise be required.

Electro-Tech Systems is pleased to announce the opening of its new state-of-the-art ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) Environmental Test Lab at the Spark Technology Center located in Perkasie, PA. This compelling new facility is capable of the low humidity needed for ESD testing to industry standards. It provides ample space to test large or multiple samples and is fitted with static dissipative worksurfaces and flooring.
ETS can perform a wide array of ESD testing including product qualification tests in accordance with standards including ANSI-ESD S20.20, SAE J1645, and many more.
